.us Locality Domains (*.city.state.us) — On Our Radar

Status: 🟡 Under observation
Why we're talking about it: Developers are eyeing these hierarchical subdomains as a low-cost alternative for hyper-local identity, unaware that the registry is largely a collection of "zombie" infrastructure (Source: HN).
What we know:
- WHOIS privacy is strictly prohibited for all .us domains by NTIA mandate as of early 2026, making registration a significant doxxing risk for individuals (Source: Bluehost/NTIA).
- GoDaddy currently maintains a moratorium on new third-level delegations, requiring notarized letters from municipal IT departments that usually don't exist or won't cooperate (Source: about.us/HN).
- Only 128 active Delegated Managers remain for 13,265 tracked locality names, leaving most of the namespace in administrative deadlock (Source: about.us Monthly Report Feb 2026).
The unknowns:
- We don't know yet if the 2026 NTIA contract winner, likely announced June 30, will finally permit WHOIS privacy (Source: UsedBy Dossier).
- There is no definitive list of which of the 7,338 'Delegated Manager Agreements' actually respond to emails in 2026 (Source: UsedBy Dossier).
This article will be updated when we have more data. Until then, proceed with caution.
Ship clean code,
Marcus.
